6 ITEMS OF INTEREST
1) Greetings from scenic Cortez, CO! The La Plata mountains majestically frame this quaint, southwestern town. Mesa Verde National Park is 9 miles southeast of Cortez. We highly recommend the area for an intriguing vacation, and the Lighthouse Baptist Church for a place to worship the Lord and make some new friends.
Lighthouse Baptist Church of Cortez invited us to present music for their Valentine Banquet Friday evening. Sunday we will present music for their AM & PM services, and George will be teaching the adult Sunday morning class and preaching in the morning service. We’ll present a concert in the evening service. Pastor Larry Chappell resigned last Sunday due to illness. The doctors said his thyroid is out of control. They are hopeful that his condition will be stabilized in the next few months.
2) A Bed & Breakfast Recommendation:
Looking for a vacation to the Sand Dunes National Park and need a cozy place to stay? Try the Apple Lodge B&B of Del Norte, CO. We stayed there for the first time Thursday night en route to Cortez. We enjoyed a very homey, relaxed atmosphere. Tell Innkeepers, Mark and Judy Applewhite, that we sent you! (They are born again Christians and will treat you right.)
The AppleLodge is in Del Norte, CO of the Colorado Rockies!

3) An unusual assignment completed in January:
A year ago, Greg Wagoner, a missionary to Tanzania for the past 10 years, contacted George and asked him if he would produce music for their DVD. The DVD would feature their missionary work. It would be shown in churches in the states when they are on furlough in 2007. Since George had no good reason to say no, he accepted the job with some reservation… he wondered if he could come up with appropriate words and music for a song called “Tanzania Treasure,” plus background music for the various scenes and activities throughout the DVD. By the end of December George had the song written, but he had to wait and see the visuals before he could produce the accompanying background music.
On January 4, Greg and his 10 year old daughter, Abigail, arrived. There in our livingroom, Greg showed George the visual part of the project and where he wanted clips of music. Okay…now the pressure was really on! Be creative! Make up music that matches the pictures George! Well, thanks to the Lord’s help, by the end of that day, the music was done, Greg was delighted, and George was relieved! Greg was so excited about the song, Tanzania Treasure, that he called his wife Paige, and had her listen to it over the phone. Paige was in Ohio with family. [Paige was a roommate with our daughter Sarah at Liberty University, hence the contact.]
You can see a clip of the DVD and hear the song: www.bimt.us
4) Pastors and Bookings
George and I are so grateful to pastors and churches for their willingness to give us the privilege of using our ministry of music to present God’s Word and His teachings. Thanks to them, our 2007 calendar is filling up! Take a look at our Itinerary. If you would like your church to host us, we would love to hear from you.
On January 14, Pastor Jim Duncan of Bible Baptist Church in Erie, CO, faced an unusual Sunday morning when he arrived to find their beautiful new auditorium flooded! A water pipe had burst. The cold temps revealed a design flaw in the placement of the water pipe as the building had been kept warm. Well, in spite of the disaster, we set up in the fellowship hall and God’s word was proclaimed. Brother Jim’s message was Philippians 4:4 “Rejoice in the LORD alway: and again I say, Rejoice!” What a timely message! The pastor and the church were a testimony to us. They rejoiced even in trying times! Rejoicing in the LORD is a vital ingredient we Christians tend to leave out when things go wrong.
5) Heaven’s population continues to grow…
What a month! We have attended 3 funerals and responded to 3 other families in other states whose loved ones have passed over…
Saturday, January 27, in Cheyenne, WY, George and I sang for the memorial service of one of our most special fans–22 year old Vicki Raquet. Vicki had cerebral palsy. Her parents, who helped her lead a very active life, brought her regularly to Beacon Hill Baptist Church and to youth camp services, which is how we came to know her. They told us that she loved our music. Wow! What an encouragement.
We were so honored that her parents asked us to do the music for her “graduation service.” The reality of her release from bondage into the total freedom of heaven was impressed upon me when her father brought her empty wheelchair into the auditorium and parked it among all the flowers. My eyes instantly filled with tears. When Vicki breathed her last breath on earth, in an instant, she was absent from the body and present with the LORD! I pictured Vicki running into the arms of Jesus. Even now as you finish reading this account, we know the Raquet family would appreciate a prayer on their behalf as they journey on without their beloved daughter.
A dear friend and former employer, Dick Wentland, former owner of Mountain West Printing in Denver, CO, passed over into heaven on February 1. I had worked a few years at Mtn. West in the customer service department. Dick insisted that I didn’t work “for” him, but “with” him. I liked that! George and I were friends of Dick and his wife, Doris, for many years. One time while I still worked at Mtn West, George picked me up for lunch on the motorcycle. After lunch, we found our cycle had a flat tire. Now what?! I called Dick. He cheerfully came in his truck and rescued us. Now you try that with the owner of your company! Several times Dick and Doris offered us hospitality in their WY, NC and FL homes. They were always so thoughtful and encouraging to us, and prayed for us.
Other dear friends who passed on in Janary were Paul Riley and Haskal Gallimore. They were long time, faithful members of Beth Eden Baptist Church of Denver, where George and I served for 10 years. We were able to attend their memorial services.
As heaven’s population steadily grows–the mansion-building program is booming there!–may we all be cognizant of our own mortality.
“Only one life will soon be passed.
Only what’s done for Christ will last.”
I Thess 5:8-11 “But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation, For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.”
6) Were you aware that Colorado’s State Motto is: “Nil Sine Numine: Nothing without Providence.” As George and I are planning 2007, and preparing our “To Do” list, we are very aware, based on last year’s experiences–which are still fresh in our minds–that we need to submit all our plans to the Lord and ask for His will to be done. Our Pastor, Harold Marcilliott, in a recent message, quoted Derrick Kidner, who wrote a book on Job. Derrick writes: “9/10’s of life is regular and manageable therefore the book of Proverbs; but 1/10 of life is wholly unexpected and unexplainable, therefore the book of Job. Job categorically rejects any air tight formula whereby all the righteous prosper and all the wicked are punished in this life.” (He references Isaiah 55:8-9) May we all, as brothers and sisters in Christ, keep in mind as we look forward to the future that “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.” Proverbs 16:9 “Nil Sine Numine! Nothing without Providence!”
Our theme for 2007, our 20th year of full-time ministry is: “LOOKING UNTO JESUS, THE AUTHOR AND FINISHER OF OUR FAITH!” (Hebrews 12:2)
We appreciate your prayers. George & Kathy Abbas
